The Trump movement's most illuminating and distinctive instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of casualties from his cuts to USAID stands at 600,000 and rising, and this week research projected his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have risked – really, no other president would have conceived – independently wrecking major areas of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.

As bewildering as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Savior that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre of Americans might have little sense of him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; however I believe that there are pearls of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is decidedly not the narrative of a powerful ruler arising; conversely, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade secret police. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his teaching concerns compassion for other people, specifically for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your jacket you must offer him your sweater as well.
The obvious and clear reality that the Jesus from scripture requests a kind of profound affection centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christianity rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. In the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Finest Among Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to witness the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the initiative that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities within national heritage.
